was levi strauss. now, 140 years later 450 million pairs of jeans are sold every year in the u.s. alone. now, you would think with that volume, the manufacturing process would be totally mechanized but actually a lot of it is still done by hand. a typical pair of jeans is made from 15 individual pieces, someone has to oversee cutting all of those pieces and sew them together and as you can see in this discovery channel documentary, the seams get ironed out flat then the zipper and the rivets are attached and finally, because who wants new-looking jeans they get distressed. workers put them on giant rubber legs that get blown up like balloons and then they give some rough treatment to them so they really look like they came out of a california mine. now, that discovery channel documentary might show satisfied workers happily doing their jobs but the truth is that kind of work is really hard. it requires a lot of tough manual labor. and for that, american companies have gone overseas and specifically to bangladesh. that c

at the flag at the white house lowered to half staff to remember the victims and the families. here to give us some perspective on the shootings, rich marionos, the assistant director and special agent in charge of the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms and explosives. he is the lead investigator for control bum line shootings in 19 -- columbine shootings from 1999 and joins us in washington. rich, thank u for being here. this is a horrific investigation. first, it's tough to even deal with to start the investigation for experts who have been talking about this all day. they said it's tough to even do it. once you get in to it, what are they doing from the beginning to begin their looking in to this guy and starting the evidentiary gathering? >> guest: i never thought once again in my entire career i'd go through another incident similar to columbine. the entire bureau and the law enforcement members are just saddened and send our sympathies out to the families. we as an agency with atf and the partners are so commit to make sure that we come up with a motive and come up with every answer

himself, a noble attribute most of us take as quiet courage. as embarrassing as it is to admit, he is one of the few top politicians in this democratic country to master foreign languages. not a small talent in world diplomacy. i like kerry because he's had the guts to run for office just like hillary clinton. he's had the nerve to stick his neck out and ask the voter to like him or not like him, to trust him or not trust him. that to me is the key to true democratic government. i've said so before. i hope the president makes him his secretary of state. it would be the first strong move to building a powerful second term cabinet, to building the team that will, with god's blessing, take barack obama into global history. we americans need to be the peacemakers. john kerry can help barack obama be just that. joining me now is nbc news chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd and "the washington post's" nia malika henderson. do you know when the president decided with or along with ambassador rice to decide that she should formally remove herself from consideration?

, craig. >> again, the president will speak in just moments so stay with us and they're lower the flags right now at the capitol. nbc's kristen welker is back for us at the white house. >> reporter: well, underscores the fact not just a tragedy for the state of connecticut but for the entire nation. president obama just releasing this statement. i'm going to read it to you. he says, quote, i here by order that the flag of the united states at half staff at white house and all public buildings and grounds at all military posts and naval stations and on all naval vessels of the federal government and the district of columbia and throughout the united states and the territories and possessions until sunset december 18th, 2012. again, the flag here at the white house will be flown at half staff and the other flags here throughout the capital. president obama making it clear that the federal government stands with connecticut as it endures this tragedy. and tries to cope with this tragedy. the president was alerted about this situation at 10:30 this morning by the national security adviser.
